The Supported Living Program

The Supported Living Program began in November of 1996. Persons with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities who desire an independent living arrangement are identified and assisted, as needed, to make the transition to living on their own with agency-provided and/or natural supports. Potential residences are identified that are appropriate to the individual's needs and resources. Deficient life skills are enhanced or developed through individual instruction or in classes. Natural supports are nurtured in the community that will ultimately provide the Inter-dependent relationships necessary for success.

As with other services of The Arc, Supported Living is provided in a "Coach" based model. The Supported Living Specialist, or Coach, provides the security and comfort of availability 24/7/365 as the individual travels the path from dependence to independence. Whatever the presenting area of concern, the Coach assists as needed, in shopping, banking, cooking or home maintenance. The Coach provides the individual with information and resources that promote success in living as independently as possible.

The Arc of the Glades offers Supported Living Program services to adults in Western Palm Beach County who are mentally retarded or developmentally disabled and whose choice to participate is reflected in a current Support Plan. Supported Living Program participants have a broad range of abilities and limitations and are actively encouraged to contribute to their fullest capacity in the choices a new residence presents.
