The Adult Day Training Program

The Glades Area ARC provides Adult Day Training (ADT) to residents of western Palm Beach County with developmental disabilities or mental retardation. Consumers receive six hours of ADT daily for a minimum of 230 days annually. Services commence upon transition from school board services. The target population ranges from 18 years to senior citizenry. The ADT program is intended to be a step in the continuum of services resulting in greater inclusion and participation in community activities. The consumer, the Glades Area ARC (if invited), the Waiver Support Coordinator (WSC) and other consumer-invited participants explore the individual's ambitions and levels of ability and develop an individual support plan (ISP) describing specific goals and objectives to be addressed to meet those goals.

Glades Area ARC ADT provides a therapeutic environment enhancing the program participant’s ability to participate in normal integrated activities in the community. Strategies including simulations and excursions are used with classroom instruction to develop daily living skills necessary for success. All strategies are targeted to meet individual needs and personal goals as addressed in the individual support plan. Community resources are utilized to provide integrated and inclusive experiences. The consumer is encouraged to increase community contact and involvement up to and including transition to Supported Employment (S/E) and/or Supported Living (S/L). Community inclusion activities are possible for those individuals who do not become candidates for S/E or S/L programs.

The program goal is to provide a therapeutic adult day training program that meets the consumer's stated needs and enhances the consumer's ability to interact with the community.

Adult day training has evolved from a segregated workshop activity with limited movement by individuals into a program within a continuum of programs dedicated to eventual supported employment, supported living, and/or community inclusive activities as generally desirable outcomes for many consumers. In preparation for these outcomes, individuals are given instruction individually and in groups, focusing on needs identified in the individual support plan and the subordinate individual program plan. Skill and ability development is monitored, and if progress is not evident goals are adjusted to more realistic levels and strategies for accomplishing goals are reconsidered. Monetary compensation is given to consumers who generate income-producing or cost-saving activity.

Glades Area ARC maintains an extensive network of provider relationships developed over 25 years of service provision in the western county area. The agency also employs an agency social worker to coordinate services between the individual and other supports and services.
